Another cyber fraud incident came to light last week in Delhi, where a chartered accountant was victimised by a sophisticated scam after interacting with a fraudulent application through WhatsApp. This is a fresh instance of cybercrime targeting unsuspecting individuals in routine financial transactions, reported News24.

Furthermore, the CA lost ₹75,694 after downloading a malicious file masquerading as a legitimate banking app. This shows how one should be cautious and alert when dealing with any type of digital scam.

How did the scam take place?

Here, the fraudsters had experience with a credit card company, which gave them access to customers' sensitive information. Using fake SIM cards, they pretended to be bank officials and called victims, telling them that they could increase the limits of their credit cards.

In this way, they shared a malicious APK file, which, when installed, gave the criminals remote access to the victim's phone and credit card details. With it, they made some fictitious online purchases and later sold them on OLX.

5 important lessons to learn to protect yourself from such scams

I. Never download APK files from an unknown source

As a rule, never download any APK file; also, avoid downloading any application through WhatsApp. Be clear, banks never send applications or links through SMS or WhatsApp. Never given in to undue pressure from anyone.

II. Verify the credentials before you trust

Never trust anyone who sends you a message or link without your consent. Contact the official banking helpline before taking action in haste on any suspicious messages or calls. If needed, don’t hesitate to contact your nearest police station. Proper due diligence is a must in such situations.

III. Protect sensitive information

Never share sensitive data such as OTPs, CVVs, ATM PINs, credit card numbers, images or internet banking information with anyone. These are all confidential data points intended to help you; they should never be shared with anyone, whether by phone, text, or email.

IV. Use official app stores only

When downloading applications, you should do so exclusively from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store. These are the two most popular and trusted application downloading platforms. Any other application you download via any link in WhatsApp, text messages, or emails is a clear red flag and should be avoided at all costs.

V. Report the fraud immediately

If you are convinced that you have been duped or an amount has been subtracted from your credit card or bank account, then first, do not panic. Only ensure that you report the fraud to the relevant authorities immediately. Block your credit card and contact the nearest police station to register an FIR. Keep a copy with you for future reference.

In conclusion, amid the rapid evolution of digital fraud in the country, it is essential for credit card users and bank account holders to be vigilant against such scams and take appropriate precautions to stay safe.
